She served eight years in the Texas House of Representatives\, most of that time as a Democrat\, before officially joining the Republican Party in August 2024. Some of Shawn’s notable actions prior to her break from the Democratic party include her backing of a bill banning gender affirming care for minors\, along with her support of banning transgender athletes from women’s sports and removing explicit books from school libraries. In January of this year\, Governor Abbott appointed her to the Texas Juvenile Justice Board where her duties include oversight of a $1 billion state agency focused on youth justice\, public safety\, and institutional accountability. She also serves as General Counsel and Executive Director of Policy for the Texas Southern University Board of Regents. \nWith an unwavering commitment to public service and a legacy of advocacy in her community\, Shawn’s journey and perspective promise to inspire and energize our 35th Anniversary Luncheon where we will be Celebrating the Past\, Empowering the Future.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are also very excited to announce that Texas GOP Vice-Chairwoman and former GCRW President will join us as the Master of Ceremonies! D’rinda exemplifies an unwavering dedication to community service and political activism. Since 2008\, she has been instrumental in organizing diverse campaigns\, including block walks\, voter registration drives\, and leveraging social media for outreach. Her leadership is evident in her successful expansion of GCRW to over 500 members and her extensive tenure as a precinct chair. Additionally\, she served as an Alternate to the 2016 National Republican Convention and has held the role of Presiding Judge in recent elections\, demonstrating her commitment to fair and efficient electoral processes.
